Anti Fouling - Cruise Ships Anode Arrangements

On cruise ships it is usually necessary to protect a large number of seachests serving the seawater cooling systems for the engines as well as ancillary equipment such as air conditioning systems and vital fire fighting pumps.

Because of the large volumes of seawater to be treated, multiple pairs of anodes are fitted in these seachests. In some cases, as many as 5 pairs of anodes are required to treat the seawater flow.
Pipework systems on cruise ships are usually made from cupro-nickel materials. Therefore, Cathelco provide pairs of copper and ferrous anodes to eliminate bio-fouling and suppress corrosion within pipework.

In operation, the copper anodes release ions which are carried throughout the seawater lines by the flow of seawater creating an environment where barnacles and mussels cannot settle or breed. At the same time, the ferrous anodes produces ions which create oxide films on the inside surfaces of pipes to suppress corrosion.
